New Jersey Security Camera Installation Laws: Is Your MSP Licensed?

At Systems Integrations, we speak with new clients every week who are unknowingly putting their businesses at risk. The scenario is usually the same: a business needs new video surveillancecameras or data cabling, and they ask their Managed Service Provider (MSP) to handle it.

It makes sense on the surface. Modern security cameras are IP-based network devices—so it’s easy to assume your IT provider should be the one to install them.

Many MSPs believe that if a device connects to a network switch, it falls under standard IT work. But in New Jersey, installing video surveillance equipment—and often the cabling that supports it—can require specific state licensing that many IT providers don’t carry.

The Law on Video Surveillance in New Jersey

In New Jersey, installing and servicing security and video surveillance systems is a regulated trade. Under N.J.A.C. 13:31A-1.2, contractors must hold the appropriate state licensing to legally install and service video surveillance equipment.

If your provider is installing cameras without the required license, they may be operating outside of state law—which can create serious liability and compliance issues for your business.

What About the Data Cabling?

The regulations don’t stop at the cameras themselves. What about the Cat6 cable running through your ceiling to connect cameras, access points, and workstations?

Under N.J.A.C. 13:31-4.1, a Telecommunications Wiring Exemption is required for certain data cabling work in New Jersey. If your provider is pulling wire without the proper exemption, that’s another compliance risk.

How to Protect Your Business

Fortunately, New Jersey makes it straightforward to spot potential red flags. License information should appear on quotes and proposals. If you receive a proposal for a camera system or cabling project and there’s no NJ license number listed, treat that as a sign to ask questions.

You can also verify credentials directly through the state’s portal: New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification.

The Systems Integrations Difference

We understand the network side—switching, VLANs, cybersecurity, and infrastructure—because we do IT work too. The difference is that we also have the licensing and field expertise to handle the physical security side of the network legally and correctly.

We bridge the gap between IT and physical security so your cameras and cabling are installed safely, professionally, and in compliance with New Jersey requirements.
