The Critical Importance of Licensing and Continuing Education in Electronic Security

Licensing and ongoing education are not just regulatory checkboxes in the electronic security industry—they are essential safeguards for clients and businesses alike. Recent enforcement actions by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs underscore the risks associated with non-compliance and the high standards demanded of security professionals in New Jersey.

Recent Disciplinary Action: A Timely Warning

On January 12, 2026, the State of New Jersey issued a formal disciplinary order against a licensed alarm installer, “NAME WITHHELD”, highlighting several critical failures in compliance. According to the official order:

“Respondent was also asked whether he was compliant with his continuing education requirements. He stated he did not complete the continuing education requirement for both the 2019, nor the 2022, triennial renewal periods.”

Even more concerning, the Respondent admitted to a lack of fundamental knowledge regarding the National Electrical Code, stating:

“Respondent was unable to tell the Committee the date of the current National Electrical Code utilized by New Jersey. When asked how he is able to perform alarm and electronic security work, without knowing which electrical code to abide by, Respondent stated he merely performs the work and relies upon the code inspector to tell him if the installation is wrong.”

As a result, the Committee ordered the immediate surrender of both his burglar alarm and fire alarm licenses, with restoration contingent upon passing all licensing examinations and demonstrating compliance with all regulatory requirements:

“Respondent, “NAME WITHHELD”, shall immediately surrender his individual license to engage in the burglar alarm business in the State of New Jersey, until further order of the Committee… Prior to any consideration of an application for restoration of his license… Respondent shall: a. Demonstrate competence by obtaining a passing score on all sections of the burglar alarm licensing examination… c. Comply with the requirements for reinstatement of license found at N.J.A.C. 13:31A-1.7.”

Why Professional Licensing Matters in NJ

In the electronic security world, a license is more than a permit; it is a badge of reliability.

  • Client Safety & Legal Compliance: Licensed contractors undergo rigorous background checks and must maintain specific insurance coverage. This protects property owners from liability and ensures that those entering your facility have been vetted by the State.
  • Comprehensive Quality Assurance: Licensing ensures professionals possess the technical knowledge required to install and maintain modern security ecosystems for businesses in Gloucester, Camden, Salem, Cape May, Atlantic, Burlington, Ocean, Mercer, Cumberland counties (NJ); Delaware, Chester, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Montgomery, Berks, Bucks counties (PA); and New Castle County (DE).
  • Accountability: Licensed firms are subject to state oversight, providing clients with official recourse in the event of substandard work or ethical misconduct.

The Role of Continuing Education

The security industry moves at the speed of technology. New vulnerabilities, software patches, and compliance requirements emerge every year. New Jersey mandates annual continuing education for license holders to ensure technicians remain experts in:

  • Advanced electronic security (cloud-based surveillance, biometric access control, mobile credentialing)
  • Life safety regulations (state and federal fire codes, ADA compliance)
  • Cybersecurity and system hardening (protecting physical security hardware from network-based threats)
